AK Interactive Acrylic Washes Review

This is not a formal review – more of a study – but I recently picked up a set of the AK Interactive acrylic washes. I’m a big fan of the 3rd Gen paints, so I was keen to try these out. I thought it might be helpful for others to see the results!

The first thing I noticed was that they dry to a soft matte finish – very similar to the original Citadel washes before the formula was changed and they became more glossy. I think this aspect will appeal to many hobbyists. They flow nicely into the recesses – comparable to the Citadel washes – and create a nice smooth transition.

There’s a good range of colours, especially for flesh tones, and some colours that could be useful for weathering effects, such as the two Rust colours (15 & 16), the Verdigris (13) and the dusty coloured Dirtveil (17). These could all see use over metallics or dark colours – including black. Rotwood Brown (01) is a good match for Agrax Earthshade and Obsidian Holt (02) is a good match for Nuln Oil. There is also a deeper black – Black Night (03) for more intense shading.

The red (10 Crimson Veil) is a bit “tomato-y” for my taste. I would prefer to see a deeper, cooler-toned red (like Carroburg Crimson). Another colour that’s missing for me is a dark blue-green (like Coelia Greenshade). The washes could be mixed to create similar colours, but it’s handy to have something consistent straight from the bottle 😁

Overall, I’m very happy with them and I’m sure they’ll see a lot of use 😌
