This guide is designed for beginner to intermediate level painters. The aim is to achieve a good quality paint job in a way that can be replicated relatively quickly across an army. Some of the later steps are optional, so the method can be ‘scaled’ from rank and file to more special models such as commanders and characters.

A certain level of experience and understanding is assumed of basic painting techniques such as basecoating, layering, using shading washes and edge highlighting, but more ‘advanced’ techniques such as freehand or NMM are avoided to ensure maximum accessibility.

Great guide. Nice step by step, all the colors are clearly laid out and indicated. Some nice step by step about eyes and the chest eagle, but oddly skips techniques such as dents and scratches. An enthusiastic ‘ must buy’ , though. I’ll pick up a couple others, if only to get the color shading advice.

      Hi Scott,

Thanks for the feedback! The scratches are described on Steps 8 and 9 – unless I have misunderstood you? I may add some diagrams for this if it would better explain the process for users.

      Thanks,
      Luther

    Hi Luther,
just one question: are the colors used mostly Vallejo and are there suggestions for GW substitutes in the guide? Thanks a lot!

      Hi Nick,

The paints are mainly Vallejo, though all the washes are Citadel.

Citadel equivalents aren’t given for the paints in the guide itself, but I would be happy to discuss and help find alternatives.

      Cheers!

I’ve just bought the PDF and I love it. But it could be possible to know the equivalents of Citadel? I usually paint with Citadel and the painting guide is mostly for Vallejo.

      Hi Rubén,

Please send me an email to luther@themightybrush.com and I’ll see if I can help you with this.

      Many thanks,
      Luther

  4. Luke

    Mighty Brush,
Just wondering before purchasing the guide if the methods and paints could be transferred to an airbrush and citadel/army painter paints?
    Thank you!

Hi Luke, I should be able to help with conversions from Vallejo to Citadel, but please note that Vallejo is a larger range, so there will not be an exact match for every colour in the smaller Citadel range.
